Friendship Forever Monument

Situated around two-thirds up Ulitsa Bolshaya Gruzinskaya is Tishinskaya Ploschad.  The main landmark here is the gigantic pillar consisting of letters in the Georgian and Cyrillic alphabet. The monument is the work of the famous sculptor Zurab Tsereteli; his first monument in Moscow. Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Cathedral

Ivan Krylov Monument

Lavrenti Beria's Mansion (Tunisian Embasy)

The mansion in which the Tunisian Embassy is now located has a sinister history as it was once the home of Lavrenti Beria, the chief of Stalin's secret police.  It is alleged that Beria would drive around Moscow to select young girls to take back to his mansion to rape and that some girls were even murdered and buried in the mansion's garden;  human remains were found in the grounds in 2001 during a renovation. In 1864 the Moscow Zoo became the first zoo in Russia.  Today the zoo has over 1000 species of animals and consists of two sections on either side of the road connected by a small footbridge and decorated with statues of animals. Stalin Skyscraper on Kudrinskaya Ploschad

Slightly hidden among the trees in a small park on Ulitsa Spiridonovka is a statue of the lyrical poet Aleksandr Blok, who is traditionally more associated with St Petersburg than Moscow. Standing on the corner of Voznesensky Pereulok and Yeliseevsky Pereulok is a statue of the Soviet/Azeri opera and pop singer Muslim Magomaev, who was especially popular throughout the Soviet Union in the 1960s and 1970s. Magomaev was born in Baku (now the capital of independent Azerbaijan) in 1942 and died in Moscow in 2008. In the small park between Voznesensky Pereulok and Leontievsky Pereulok next to the Azerbaijani Embassy is a statue of the mediaeval poet Nizami Ganjavi who wrote some of the greatest romantic epic poems in Persian literature. Nizami was born around 1141 in Ganja which is now part of present-day Azerbaijan, hence the statue's location next to the embassy. Maria Yermolova was considered to be one of the greatest actresses in the history of the Maly Theatre of Moscow. Between 1889 and 1928 she lived on Tverskoy Bulvar and in 1986 this house was opened as a museum dedicated to her life and creative work.  The museum displays personal belongings of the actress and the interior is as it looked when Yermolova lived there. Sergey Yesenin Monument

Around halfway up Tverskoy Bulvar, close to Novopushkinsky Skver, is a statue of the poet Sergey Yesenin. Yesenin is one of Russia's most celebrated 20th-century poets. He published his first book of poetry in 1916 and in 1918 set up his own publishing house and became a founder of the Russian 'imaginism' literary movement. Sholem Aleichem Monument

At the end of Ulitsa Bolshaya Bronnaya is a small monument to the Jewish author and playwright Sholem Rabinovich, who is better known as Sholem Aleichem. Sholem Aleichem was born in the Russian Empire in what is now Ukraine, but emigrated in 1905 to America. He is best known for his stories about 'Tevye the Milkman' on which the musical 'Fiddler on the Roof' is based. St John the Apostle's Church in Bronnaya Sloboda

On the side street behind the Yesenin Monument is St John the Apostle's Church in Bronnaya Sloboda. From its appearance it is clear that the church and its bell tower date from different periods. The Synagogue on Bolshaya Bronnaya was originally part of the city estate of the financier Lazar Polyakov, who received permission to convert it into a synagogue in 1883.
