Maksim Gorky Apartment-Museum

Maksim Gorky Apartment-Museum (December 2012)

The Maksim Gorky Apartment-Museum is housed in the beautiful mansion which was built for a millionaire in 1902.  The house was designed by architect Fyodor Shekhtel and is famous for its "melting" staircase, mosaics and the Old-Believers chapel on the upper floor.  Upon returning to Russia from Italy in 1931, Gorky was given an apartment in the mansion and lived here up until his death in 1936.  The museum was opened in 1965 and details the life of the author and the history of the mansion.
