In 1864 the Moscow Zoo became the first zoo in Russia.  Today the zoo has over 1000 species of animals and consists of two sections on either side of the road connected by a small footbridge and decorated with statues of animals. Although the zoo has improved in recent years and has set up an international breeding programme, some enclosures still need improving and fall behind western standards.
