St John the Apostle's Church in Bronnaya Sloboda

St John the Apostle's Church in Bronnaya Sloboda (July 2013)

On the side street behind the Yesenin Monument is St John the Apostle's Church in Bronnaya Sloboda. From its appearance it is clear that the church and its bell tower date from different periods. The church itself was built between 1652 and 1665 and consists of a standard cube structure with five domes and carved window and portal frames. The red bell tower was built on in 1842. The church was closed in the 1920s and, although it was saved from demolition, its domes were nevertheless removed and the building was given over to the Moscow Drama Theatre. However in the 1970s it was decided to restore the church and in the 1990s its domes were rebuilt. In 1991 it was returned to the Orthodox Church.
