The Ascension Church on Nikitskaya is now known as the Small Ascension Church to distinguish it from the larger Ascension Church further up the road on Ploschad Nikitskie Vorota.  This is the older of the two Ascension Churches dating from 1634.  Reconstruction work was carried out in the mid-18th century to make repairs after a fire and to add an octagonal baroque-style dome.  The church was closed in 1937 and only reopened in 1992.
