Yuriev Polsky

Despite being close to the tourist centres of Vladimir and Suzdal, the city of Yuriev-Polsky is somewhat off the beaten track. However the city boasts an earthen mound on which a kremlin once stood, a stunning monastery and a 13th-century cathedral decorated with intricate engravings, including an early (and slightly unusual) depiction of an elephant, which has now become a symbol of the city.
