Despite the plurality of its name, Patriarch Ponds only consists of one pond now which was reconstructed in the 1830s, although previously there were more ponds here.  Today the pond has an area of 9,900 square metres and is around two metres deep.  The pond was immortalised by featuring in the opening scene of Mikhail Bulgakov's novel 'The Master and Margarita' as the location where the Devil, in the disguise of Professor Woland, enters Moscow and where Berlioz gets beheaded by a tram, although no trams actually run here.
