Coat of arms

Rzhev is located on the Volga and is the uppermost city on the river and so here Europe’s largest river doesn’t look so mighty! The city is also a City of Military Glory due primarily to the Battle of Rzhev of the Second World War where the city found itself at the centre of a series of bloody operations which became known as the Rzhev Meat-Grinder. Although the city does have railway links with Moscow, the times are inconvenient. Therefore it is best to visit by bus from Tver. A trip here can also be combined with a visit to Staritsa, Ostashkov or Volokolamsk.
