Rzhev
Rzhev is located on the Volga and is the uppermost city on the river and so here Europe’s largest river doesn’t look so mighty! The city is also a City of Military Glory due primarily to the Battle of Rzhev of the Second World War where the city found itself at the centre of a series of bloody operations which became known as the Rzhev Meat-Grinder. It is best to visit from Tver. A trip here can also be combined with a visit to Staritsa, Ostashkov or Volokolamsk.
