St Andrew's Anglican Church

St Andrew's Anglican Church (August 2013)

St Andrew's Anglican Church is the only Anglican church in Moscow.  The Anglican tradition of worship in Russia dates from 1553 when Ivan the Terrible allowed English merchants of the Russia Company to practise their religion.  The church was built from red brick in the gothic revival style between 1883 and 1884 and gives the effect of a little bit of England in the centre of Moscow. During the revolution, machine guns were posted on the church's tower and afterwards the church was closed by the authorities in 1920.  It was agreed to re-allocate the building for religious worship in 1994 following a visit there by Queen Elizabeth II of the UK.  Services are held here in English for a multi-national congregation.
