Kozelsk
In 1238 Batu Khan described Kozelsk as an evil city after, against all odds, it managed to hold out against the Mongols for seven weeks when larger and better fortified cities fell within days. The city is also closely associated with the famous Optina Hermitage which is located just outside of Kozelsk and a definite highlight. A trip to Kozelsk can be combined with a trip to Kaluga.
