A trip to the Chara Sands is one of the most fascinating side trips you can do while travelling along the BAM (Baikal - Amur mainline), after all, where else could you see a desert surrounded by mountains and taiga forests. The sand dunes are located in the heart of Siberia 10km from the Novaya Chara railway station in between two mountain ranges: the Kodar Mountains to the north and the more ancient Udokan and Kolarsky Mountains to the south. The word Kodar translates from the Nenets language as ‘wall’ and it is not hard to see why they were so named, as the massive mountains form a great barrier rising almost immediately just 3 kilometres from the sands.
However, it is not that easy to get there as you need to cross a river and there are no bridges. In winter you can walk across the frozen river, but you will, of course, have to cope with freezing temperature - even as cold as -50. In summer you can either swim across or use an inflatable dinghy.
The tour will last around seven or eight hours and involve a 20km trek along a route through forests and taiga. The weather here is very unpredictable and sunny skies can quickly give way to rain. Depending on the time of year, mosquitos and other flies can be a problem, so be prepared!
