Victory Square Memorial Complex

Victory Square Memorial Complex (August 2012)

Just over the bridge of Ulitsa Sofi Perovskoy across River Tmaka in the Zatmachye part of Tver is Ploschad Pobedy (Victory Square). The memorial complex here was opened in 1970 and its main feature is the 48 metre obelisk at the base of which is an eternal flame. The area is a favourite photo-stop for newlyweds. It is not to be confused with Park Pobedy (Victory Park) off Prospekt Pobedy.

Within the park known as Remembrance Island at the confluence of the River Tmaka and the River Volga is the small and modern St Michael of Tver's Church, which can be accessed by a footbridge from Ploschad Pobedy. The simple church was completed and consecrated in 2002. It was built in the traditional ancient style of Russian churches with a four-pillar structure and a single dome.
