Ascension Church Beyond Serpukhovskie Gates

Ascension Church Beyond Serpukhovskie Gates (July 2013)

The Ascension Church Beyond Serpukhovskie Gates is so named as it was located outside the Serpukhovskie Gates which were demolished in 1798. The construction of the church was begun in 1714 using the funds of Aleksey Petrovich but then stopped before completion after the tsarevich was executed. The roof was hastily finished with a wooden covering which remained until 1762 when it was decided to finish the construction of the church. In 1839 a refectory was added and in 1842 a bell tower. In 1929 the church was closed and heavily damaged. It was only returned to the Orthodox Church in 1990 and subsequently restored.
