In the 1930s Triumphalnaya Ploschad (Triumphal Square) was renamed Mayakovskaya Ploschad (Mayakovsky Square) and this statue of Vladimir Mayakovsky was installed here in 1958. The statue is the work of the sculpture Aleksandr Kibalnikov who was awarded the Lenin Prize for his depiction of the poet. The square on which Mayakovsky stands has since returned to its former name, which was so named as triumphal arches used to be constructed here to celebrate the coronations of tsars.
