St Martin the Confessor's Church

St Martin the Confessor's Church (February 2014)

Rather unusually for a Russian Orthodox church, St Martin the Confessor's Church is dedicated to a Roman Catholic pope - Martin I. The church was built between 1791 and 1806 in the classical style under a project by the famous architect Rodion Kazakov. In form it has a large central dome, a bell tower and facades decorated with columns and pediments. The church was closed in 1931 and only returned to the Orthodox Church in 1996. It was re-consecrated in 1998.
