Stroganov Estate in Brattsevo

The historical village of Brattsevo was incorporated into Moscow in 1960 and in now located in the north west of the city just before the MKAD Ring Road.  The most famous surviving feature of the village is the Intercession Church in Brattsevo, which was built in approximately 1657 when the village was owned by boyar Bogdan Khitrovo.  The main structure of the petty church is topped with five domes and a small side-chapel was built on in the 19th century.  A bell tower was also added but this was destroyed in 1928 just before the church was closed in the 1930s.  It was only reopened in 1993.

In 1780 Brattsevo was acquired by Count Aleksandr Stroganov.  Stroganov's wife Yekaterina was having an affair with Ivan Rimsky-Korsakov, a former favourite of Catherine the Great 10 years her junior and in 1779 when the affair became public, Yekaterina left her husband and settled in Brattsevo with her lover.  Under the couple the estate's main house was constructed between 1813 and 1815.  In 1815 the countess died, but Rimsky-Korsakov remained at the estate and was responsible for the further development of the estate.  After the Revolution the estate was nationalised and used for various purposes. Today a restaurant and a hotel are located here. To get here you can take bus No. 267 from Skhodnenskaya metro station.
