Moscow State University
Perhaps the most impressive of the seven Stalin Skyscrapers is the main building of the Lomonosov Moscow State University which stands on the top of Vorobyovy Gory (Sparrow Hills). It is certainly the tallest of the seven standing at 182 metres tall or 240 metres tall if you include the spire. It was built between 1949 and 1953 and its main architect was Lev Rudnev. Its facade is decorated with sculptures of the famous sculptress Vera Mukhina, who is supposed to have suggested that her masterpiece - the Worker and Kolkhoz Woman Monument - be incorporated as part of the building.
Just outside the front of the university is a viewing platform from where you can get great views of the city. There is also a botanical garden on the university campus, but this can only be visited as part of a special excursion.
Monuments
Within the territory of the campus of the Moscow State University, which is open to the public, there are many statues and monuments. In the alley running up to the university there are several busts of Russia's greatest scientists. Behind the building is a statue of Mikhail Lomonosov, the founder of the original university and after whom the university is named.
Standing in front of the university's library is a statue of Ivan Shuvalov, who was a favourite of Empress Elizabeth and played a significant role in the development of science in Russia and the foundation of the first university in Russia, which became the Moscow State University.
One other interesting monument is the Monument to the Moscow State University Student Labour Detachment. This monument was unveiled in 2009 to mark the 50th anniversary of the first detachment of 399 students departing to work in the virgin lands of Kazakhstan.
