In 1988 a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled on the north-western side of the square joining the statue of Indira Gandhi.  The statue was a present from the Indian government and depicts the great man walking with a staff and wearing his tradition dress of a dhoti and shawl.  An exact copy of the statue stands in the Indian city of Madras.
