The crossroad of Lomonosovsky Prospekt and Michurinsky Propekt was named Ploschad Indiry Gandi (Indira Gandhi Ploschad) in 1985 following the assassination of Indira Gandhi, the third prime minister of India. Under Indira Gandhi, India enjoyed a close relationship with the Soviet Union. In 1987 a statue of Indira Gandhi was unveiled on the southern side of the square. It is the work of the famous Russian sculptor Oleg Komov.
