Located in the northern wing of the Mariinsky Hospital is the Fyodor Dostoevsky Apartment-Museum. Dostoevsky was born in this hospital in 1821 and lived in the apartment where the museum is now located from 1823 to 1837 as his father worked at the hospital. The museum was opened in 1928 and restored between 1979 and 1982. The museum is run as a branch of the State Literature Museum. In the gardens in front of the hospital itself is a statue of the great author.
