St Nicholas' Church of the Bell Ringers

St Nicholas' Church of the Bell Ringers (December 2012)

St Nicholas' Church at Zvonary gets its name as it is located in what was once Zvonarskaya Sloboda, which was a special settlement for bell-ringers ('zvonary') of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in the Kremlin. Although there has been a church here since the times of Ivan the Terrible, the current version dates from between 1780 and 1781. It was built in the baroque style according to a design by the architect Karl Blank. In the 1930s the church was closed and subsequently used as a storehouse. It was reopened in 1994 as a podvorie (embassy church) of the Pühtitsa Convent in Estonia.
