Sretensky Monastery
The Sretensky Monastery was founded in 1397 at the location where Grand Prince Vasili I met the Our Lady of Vladimir Icon when it was brought from Vladimir to Moscow to protect the city from Tamerlane who was heading for Moscow. The word 'sretenia' means meeting. When Tamerlane unexpectedly turned back the icon was credited with saving the city and the monastery was built in gratitude. In the 16th century the monastery was relocated to its present day location. In 1925 the monastery was closed and two of its churches were demolished. The monastery was returned to the Orthodox Church in 1991.
Our Lady of Vladimir Cathedral
The only surviving church in the monastery is the Our Lady of Vladimir Cathedral. The traditional five-domed cathedral dates to 1679 and includes a small bell tower. Inside the cathedral's beautiful early 18th-century frescos have been preserved.
