Epiphany Eparchial Cathedral in Yelokhovo

Epiphany Eparchial Cathedral in Yelokhovo (July 2013)

The Epiphany Cathedral in Yelokhovo is often simply called the Yelokovo Cathedral. The name Yelokhovo comes from the fact that the village of Yelokh was once located here until it was merged into Moscow. St Basil the Blessed is said to have been born in Yelokh. The first stone church here was built between 1717 and 1772 and then replaced with a second version between 1790 and 1792. In 1799 the poet Aleksandr Pushkin was baptised here, which is commemorated with a plaque. The current version of the cathedral dates from 1835 and 1845. It was built in the empire style according to a plan by the architect Yevgraf Tyurin. It comprises a large main section topped with a large central dome and four smaller domes on each corner. A tall bell tower is also attached via a large vestibule. The cathedral, although threatened with closure at several points, remained opened throughout the whole Soviet period and from 1938 and 1991 served as the seat of the patriarch - effectively the country's main working cathedral. In 2008 Patriarch Alexius II was laid to rest in the cathedral.
