Dormition Cathedral and Epiphany Church Complex

Belozersk's principal working cathedral is the Dormition Cathedral which is located on Ulitsa Karla Marksa as part of a church complex with the Epiphany Church.

Dormition Cathedral

Work on the construction on the Dormition Cathedral began in 1553 and was completed in the 1570s, making it the oldest surviving building in Belozersk and one of the oldest in the Russian North. In form it consists of the traditional four-pillar five-domed cubic structure.  The cathedral was closed in the 1930s and briefly used as a museum until it was reopened for worship in the 1940s, remaining open ever since.

Epiphany Church

The Dormition Cathedral's smaller neighbour is the Epiphany Church which served as the complex's winter church, meaning that it was heated.  It dates from 1798 and consists of a two-story main structure attached to a bell tower via a closed vestibule.
