Exaltation of the Cross Cathedral

The main cathedral on the Romanov Side of Tutaev is the Exaltation of the Cross Cathedral which stands where the wooden fortress built on the orders of Grand Princess Maria Yaroslavna was once situated and parts of the earthen mounds remain.  The current stone-version of the cathedral dates from approximately 1658 and was built on the orders of Metropolitan Iona Sysoevich of Rostov to replace an earlier wooden version.  It features a traditional cube structure topped with five domes and a tent-dome bell tower built onto its eastern corner.  The interior was decorated with frescos in 1676 by a group of artists from Kostroma and Yaroslavl, headed by the famous fresco-painter Guri Nikitin.  In 1930, the cathedral's community were unable to raise funds needed for restoration work and on this ground the cathedral was closed.  It was only returned to the Orthodox Church in 1992.   Services are now held here and restoration work is being carried out.  Sections of its 17th century frescos are still in a good condition, although in some places only the outlines remain.
