Borisoglebsk Side

Resurrection of Christ Cathedral

Although the Borisoglebsk Side of Tutaev has less churches than the Romanov Side, the Borisoglebsk Side's Resurrection Cathedral is one of the most spectacular in the city.  The cathedral was built between 1670 and 1678, on the site of a former monastery and where the city's first stone church stood until it collapsed in 1670.  It was built by masters from Yaroslavl and consists of a large cubic structure with five domes and a free-standing bell tower, surrounded by small walls and holy gates.  The interior of the cathedral was decorated with frescos in the 1680s by Guri Nikitin.  Frescos also adorn the exterior of the church over the main entrance and underneath the domes.  The cathedral remained open throughout the Soviet period.  The cathedral holds inside several famous icons, the most unusual of which is the three-metre high All-Merciful Saviour Icon, said to have been painted by St Dionysius  (Dionisi) of Glushitsa in the 15th century.  A ritual has since been started by worshippers where they fall to their knees and then crawl under the icon.
