Intercession Church on the Nerl

Ss Joachim and Anne's Church

Just in case you haven't yet had your fill of Russian churches Bogolyubovo also has Ss Joachim and Anne's Church which stands on Ulitsa Lenina a few hundred metres from the monastery in the direction of Vladimir.  The large, classical-style church dates from the mid-19th century and features columns and pediments.  It is of course pale in comparison to its famous neighbours. The Svyato-Bogolyubsky Monastery was originally founded by Grand Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky in 1158 when he had his residence built in Bogolyubovo.  After the murder of Andrey Bogolyubsky and then the sack of Bogolyubovo in 1177 by Grand Prince Gleb Rostislavich of Ryazan and in 1238 by the Mongol Tatars, the monastery faced hard times but remained open.
