The people of Smolensk have been involved in the flax trade for centuries, firstly spinning it by hand, then using spinning wheels and then using modern automated machines. This museum was opened in 1980 and tells the history of the production of flax in the Smolensk and displays original tools of the trade. Traditional flax products can also be purchased at the museum. The museum is run as part of the Smolensk State Museum-Reserve.
