Smolensk's History Museum is the oldest museum in the city and dates from 1888 when an archaeological museum was established in the building of the city duma. Today the museum details the history of the city which stretches back over 1000 years. Located in the same building is the Nature and Ecology Museum. Its main exhibition recreates scenes of the flora and fauna found in the Smolensk Region, but also details man's detrimental impact on nature. The museums are run as part of the Smolensk State Museum-Reserve.
