Our Lady of Smolensk Cathedral

Our Lady of Smolensk Cathedral (April 2010)

The largest cathedral in Oryol is the Our Lady of Smolensk Cathedral which was built between 1857 and 1895. In 1908 a 52-metre five-tier bell tower was added. The cathedral comprises a four-tier structure pink in colour with five golden domes. In 1938 the cathedral was closed and it was used as a bomb shelter during the Second World War. In 1951 its damaged bell tower was completely demolished. The building was then used as a bread factory until 1995 when it was restored and reopened for worship.
