Dormition Church
In the north of Ivanovo, Ulitsa Lenina turns into Ulitsa Frunze and Uspensky Gardens are located at the point this happens. Standing inside the gardens is the pretty wooden Dormition Church. It is believed that the first wooden church was built here, when the gardens were still a cemetery, in 1817 and over the years the church has been reconstructed several times. The church has a single dome and triangular roofs with a bell tower standing over its entrance. In 1935 the church was closed and was due to be used as a youth centre, until its protected status put an end to this plan and it was turned into an anti-religion museum instead. In 1942 the church was returned to Ivanovo's Old-Believers community and reopened. Since 1991 it has been a Co-Religionist (Yedinoverye) Church - meaning that it is part of the established Russian Orthodox Church, but still observes the old rituals.
