In the Staraya Tatarskaya Sloboda
Soltan (Sultanovskaya) Mosque
Standing on the corner of Ulitsa Galiaskara Kamala and Ulitsa Gabdully Tukaya is the immediately noticeable turquoise Soltan Mosque which is also known as the Eighth Congressional Mosque. The mosque dates from 1868. Its construction was funded by the Tatar merchant Ziganshi Usmanov and sometimes it is referred to as the Usmanovskaya Mosque in his honour. It was built in the tradition of medieval Volga-Tatar architecture with a three-tier minaret over its entrance. It was closed in 1931 and during this period its minaret was knocked down but later restored in 1990. In 1994 it was reopened as a functioning mosque.
