The Our Lady of Tikhvin Church is the only surviving Orthodox Church in the Staraya Tatarskaya Sloboda. The original church dates from 1646 and 1685 but this was either completed rebuilt or heavily renovated in the late 18th century. Then between 1898 and 1900 new side-chapels were built on. The church was closed in the Soviet era and only reopened in 1997. Today the church is the central church for the sub-group of Volga Tatars known as Kryashens - namely Tatars who have converted to the Orthodox faith. Services here are held in their dialect of the Tatar language.
