Zakabannaya Mosque

Zakabannaya Mosque (May 2013)

The red and green Zakabannaya Mosque gets its name as it is located across the Qaban Lake ("za Kaban") away from the majority of mosques in Kazan which are in the Staraya-Tatarskaya Sloboda. It is also known as the Millennium of Islam Mosque as it was built to commemorate the thousandth anniversary of the Volga Bulgars' adoption of Islam in 922. The mosque was built between 1924 and 1926 making it the only mosque to be built in the region during the Soviet period. However this did not save it from being closed in 1930. It was reopened in 1991.
