DESCRIPTION

Sviyazhsk is one of the main natural sights outside of Kazan, but it is not that easy to get to by yourself, especially when the river connections are not operating. Sviyazhsk is often described as an open air museum and compared to Suzdal, but Suzdal doesn't have the advantage of being located on an island in the middle of the Volga. During the excursion you will learn about the island during the reign of Ivan the Terrible and visit the historical part of the city where many 19th and early 20th century buildings have survived.

• the ruins of St Nicholas' and the Our Lady of Tikhvin Churches
• the island's monasteries
• views of the river Volga
• the stables - where you can find out about tradition handicrafts and trades.

•  Clothes:  during this excursion you will visit some religious sites and need to dress appropriately - women must wear a headscarf and a long dress, men must wear trousers in Orthodox places.
