Presentation of Virgin Mary Eparchial Cathedral

Presentation of Virgin Mary Eparchial Cathedral (May 2014)

The Presentation of Virgin Mary Eparchial Cathedral was built between 1651 and 1657 making it the oldest building in Cheboksary and the whole of the Republic of Chuvashia. Before the current stone version there was a wooden church here which was first erected in 1555 on the orders of Tsar Ivan the Terrible.  The large cubic structure has five small domes and a separate bell tower.  During the Soviet era the cathedral was closed, but reopened in 1943.   Today the cathedral serves as the eparchial cathedral of the Cheboksary and Chuvash Eparchy.  Just next to the cathedral is the headquarters of the eparchy and the modern wooden Our Lady of Vladimir Church.
