Types and classes of trains

All trains in Russia are divided into several types depending on their destination, level of comfort and speed. You can determine the type of train by its number.

Fast, year-round passenger trains. As a rule these trains are “premium” trains. Average speed of such trains up 60-90km per hour.


[151-168]

 

High-speed trains. At present Russian Railways only has three high-speed trains: Sapsan, Burevesnik and Nevsky Express. All these trains have wagons with seats. The Nevsky Express also has two wagons with compartments of six seats. Average speed of such trains up 200km per hour.

Express trains. These trains are premium trains and are quicker and make less stops. Average speed of such trains up 160km per hour.


[201-298]

Fast, seasonal passenger trains.


[301-599]

Passenger trains. The majority of Russian trains are passenger trains. These trains are slower and make longer and more frequent stops. Usually the wagons are older and less comfortable.


[600-699]

Local trains. These trains generally run within a region or between neighbouring regions.


[6000-6999]

Suburban trains, known as an Elektrichka (Электричка). These trains are not sleeper trains and only have seats. They usually run between destinations in a region or in neighbouring regions. Tickets are usually brought for these train on the day of travel.
