Before the famous Battle of Stalingrad, the city - then known as Tsaritsyn - was the site of a fierce battle between the Reds and the Whites from 1918 to 1919 as part of the Russian Civil War. The defence of Tsaritsyn by the Reds is commemorated in this monument which was erected in 1981 and depicts six figures.
