On Kazansky Island
St Nicholas' Naval Cathedral
In the very south-west corner of Kazansky Island stands the impressive St Nicholas' Naval Cathedral - so named as it was built to serve as the main shrine for the Russian navy. It was constructed between 1753 and 1762 in the distinctive Elizabethan baroque style with five domes. During the Soviet period it was never closed and served as an eparchial cathedral from 1941 and 1999.
