St Petersburg's main monument to the famous poet Mikhail Lermontov is located at the end of Lermontovsky Prospekt which is also named in his honour. Lermontov was not born in St Petersburg but he did study here, most famously in the Cavalry College, and it was outside this building that this monument was unveiled in 1916, just missing the one hundredth anniversary of Lermontov's birth. The statue is the work of sculptor Mikhail Mikeshin, who based it on a portrait of Lermontov in his uniform.
