Fyodor Dostoevsky is one of the most famous novelists not just in Russia but in the whole world.  Although he was born in Moscow he spent a large part of his life in St Petersburg which was then the Russian capital.  He died at his St Petersburg home in 1881, which is now a museum and not too far from Vladimirskaya Ploschad where this monument to him was erected in 1997.  The bronze statue depicts the Crime and Punishment writer sat down and deep in thought.
