Epiphany Church
Just on the other side of Yekateringofka River from the Catherinehof park is the Epiphany Church on Gutuevsky Island. The church was built between 1889 and 1899 in the Russian revival architectural style, which was popular at the time. Its construction commemorated the survival of Tsarevich Nikolai Aleksandrovich (who later became Emperor Nicholas II) after an assassination attempt while on an official visit to Japan. In 1935 the church was closed and its large central dome was demolished. The building was later used as a store; it was only returned to the Orthodox Church in 1991, when it underwent restoration.
