Aleksandr Nevsky Monument

Standing on Ploschad Aleksandr Nevskogo (Aleksandr Nevsky Square) just outside the Aleksandra Nevskogo-1 metro station and the Aleksandro-Nevsky Lavra is unsurprisingly a statue of Aleksandr Nevsky himself.  When Peter the Great founded the neighbouring lavra he believed he was establishing it at the site of Nevsky's famous victory over the Swedes at the Battle of the Neva.  However historians now believe the battle took place further down the Neva where the River Izhora flows into it.  This statue was unveiled in 2002 and depicts the Russian hero prince on horseback.
