Monument to the Heroic Defenders of Leningrad

The main monument to St Petersburg's war time role is located on Ploschad Pobedy (Victory Square) at the end of Moskovsky Prospekt on the way to Pulkovo Airport.   The monument is dedicated to the "heroic defenders of Leningrad" and was unveiled in 1975 on the 30th anniversary of the end of the war.  The main feature is a 48-metre obelisk and an eternal flame surrounded by a circular wall with inscriptions.  There are also many statues here of the victims and the heroes in the forms or the home guard, snipers, pilots, sailors and soldiers.  Beneath the complex is a Memorial Hall Museum which has information on the siege and two mosaics depicting the siege and the victory. A trip to this monument could be combined with a visit to the State Memorial Museum of the Defence and Siege of Leningrad and to Piskarevskoe Cemetery, for fuller picture of this terrible period of Russian history.
