St John Chrysostom's Church in Saunino
The Russian North is famous for its wooden churches and there are several fine examples dotted around the Kargopol District. By far the easiest one to visit is St John Chrysostom's Church in the village of Saunino, which is located around 6.5km from the centre of Kargopol. The church was built in 1665 and a wooden bell tower was added in the beginning of the 19th century. Inside, the church is decorated with beautifully painted panels depicting various saints, angels and cherubs. A good way of getting to the village from Kargopol is by hiring a bike and cycling there, enjoying the pretty scenery on the way.
