Kazansky Convent
The Kazansky Convent was founded in 1610 on the site of a monastery which was destroyed earlier during the Time of Troubles. It was named after its most sacred relic - a 16th century copy of the Our Lady of Kazan Icon. The convent's Our Lady of Kazan Cathedral is the main attraction of the convent and was built between 1835 and 1845 in the classical style. In addition to this there are two other churches: the Intercession Church and the Presentation of the Lord Church, both of which also date from the 19th century. In 1918 the convent was closed and its walls and tall bell tower were destroyed. Since the fall of the Soviet Union it has once again become a working convent.
