This church was built on the site of an ancient church dedicated to St Elijah the Prophet, which in turn was said to be built where a pagan temple once stood before Prince Yaroslav the Wise founded Yaroslavl. The current church dates from 1831 and is dedicated to both St Elijah the Prophet and St Tikhon. It is built in the classical style with a single dome and with facades decorated with columns and pediments.
