Nativity of Christ Church
The Nativity of Christ Church was the second church to be built outside of the kremlin and the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery, dating from 1644. Originally a wooden church stood here which in 1609 received a revered copy of the Our Lady of Kazan Icon during the Time of Troubles. The stone church was built using the funds the Guriev-Nazariev family, who were local merchants. In form the church comprises a four-pillar cube building which is surrounded on three sides by a two-storey closed gallery. The interior was decorated with frescos in 1683, again using the funds of the Guriev-Nazariev family. Next to the church is a magnificent tent-dome bell tower which also served as the holy gates when the church was once surrounded by a wall. At the end of the 1990s the church was closed for extensive reconstruction work, but services are occasionally held here.
