Epiphany Church
The Epiphany Church is another famous example of 17th century Yaroslavl architecture. It was built between 1684 and 1693 on the orders of local merchant Aleksey Zubchaninov. It was the first church in the city to be built without internal pillars. Built out of red bricks, it is topped with five black domes and its exterior is decorated with colourful ceramic tiles and two levels of kokoshniks below the domes. A red-brick bell tower has been built onto one of its corners. Its interior is completely covered with beautiful frescos which date from 1693 and predominately use golden, ochre, red and blue tones. Also inside is a six-tier iconostasis decorated with carved wooden angels. The church is now used as both a museum, part of the Yaroslavl Museum-Reserve, and for religious services.
