Victory Park

Victory Monument, Victory Park (November 2013)

Mozhaisk was briefly occupied by the Nazis in the winter of 1941/1942 and in commemoration of its liberation a victory park was established along Ulitsa Klementievskaya on Oktyabrskaya Ploschad.  The main feature of the park is the Liberator Statue which depicts a victorious Red Army soldier standing on a tall column.  Behind this statue there are various other memorials to citizens of Mozhaisk who died in the war and those who fell liberating it as well as a military grave and an eternal flame.

On the boulevard running along Ulitsa Moskovskaya there are some more monuments including one dedicated to Mozhaisk's twin cities.  It ends with Nikolskaya Ploschad where the St Nicholas Mozhaisky's Chapel stands.  This simple chapel comprises a statue of St Nicholas Mozaisky by the famous sculptor Vycheslav Klykov which was unveiled in 1988. St Nicholas is considered the protector of Mozhaisk as according to legend the saint appeared in the sky and scared off Tatar-Mongols raiders and thereby saved the city from destruction.  Mozhaisk's City of Military Glory Obelisk is also intended to be installed on this square.
